MEDIA RELEASE
 25 AUGUST 2000

EASTERN CAPE YOUTH COMMISSION CALLS FOR YOUTH TO REGISTER FOR THE NOVEMBER ELECTIONS.

The Eastern Cape Youth Commission wishes to make a clarion call to all youth to register as voters for the forthcoming municipal elections
in November 2000. This call is prompted by the meeting that we had with the IEC, Dept of Home Affairs and EC Local Govt Association
yesterday, 22 August 2000, in East London.

The purpose of the meeting was to develop an approach of encouraging potential voters to register on/before 16/17 September 2000 as IECs
Open Registration days. We have agreed to share information and resources to ensure that people register and vote.

We are now awaiting the analysis report of IEC on the number of people who have registered thus far and to develop a collaborative
strategy on outreach programme to the people and youth in particular. Part of the strategy will be to target areas that have low
registration points and to hold platforms to publicise our campaign. We will be in contact with public representatives like MPs, MPLs,
councilors, youth and students formations in their efforts to encourage voters.

It should be emphasized that every citizen has got a right and responsibility participate in the voting system. By exercising that voting
right, we participate on how we should be governed by whom to have a better life for all. Most especially, youth cannot abdicate their
responsibility to give mandate to potential councilors on how they should be governed. We appeal to you go and apply for your IDs and
register.
